Atlanta man joins Ben Carson foreign policy team

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- An Atlanta-based political consultant has a new job: foreign policy adviser to Republican presidential hopeful Ben Carson.

George Birnbaum has been a political consultant for years – much of it overseas. He was chief of staff to Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu. Now the Sandy Springs political consultant is advising Ben Carson, the neurosurgeon and relative political newcomer who has slipped in the polls of late.

Part of Carson's problem has been articulating answers to questions on foreign policy. Despite that, Birnbaum contends that Carson has what he calls an impressive depth of knowledge on foreign policy, particularly the Middle East.
