Hit-and-run driver sought in fatal I-285 incident

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- Authorities are searching for a driver in a fatal hit-and-run incident that snarled traffic on Interstate 285 for hours on Thursday morning.

According to Keith Zgonc of Sandy Springs Police, the incident happened at about 6:45 a.m. Thursday. Authorities believe 53-year-old Gayla Joyce Walker, of Dunwoody, walked on the westbound interstate lanes and was stuck by a large vehicle.

Police believe that Walker was eventually struck by several vehicles, none of which stopped.

"The person somehow walked onto 285 -- we don't know why," said Sandy Springs Police Sgt. Ronald Momon. "The person did walk onto 285 and was struck by a large vehicle. The way we determined it was a large vehicle is based on the skid marks and the size of the marks."

According to Momon, police are searching for a white pick-up truck, possibly with a camper shell on its bed. No information is available regarding the make or model of the truck, Momon said. In addition, he said, the truck will have some damage from the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call 404-577-TIPS (8477).
