SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- During the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the U.N. General Assembly designated Mar. 22 as World Water Day.

Now, nearly 20 years later, the City of Sandy Springs is gearing up to celebrate this important day.

Sandy Springs officials would like to remind residents of the water restrictions implemented throughout the state.

On Jan. 1 of this year, the Water Stewardship Act went into effect.

ARC Awards $100,000 to Milton, Cobb County

ATLANTA -- Through its award-winning Livable Centers Initiative (LCI), the Atlanta Regional Commission is giving grant money to several local governments.

These grants will help the communities create new quality growth plans in certain locations or fund the implementation of a previously-awarded LCI study to enhance the livability of the areas.

The recipients for grants to fund new LCI study areas are the City of Milton and Cobb County, at $100,000 each.

"LCI has helped communities across Metro Atlanta re-tool and redesign over the years, creating more places that attract residents and businesses alike," said Tad Leithead, ARC chairman.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- The National Park Service (NPS) will be initiating an Environmental Assessment (EA) to consider alternatives and environmental impacts related to a proposed trail project that includes sections within the boundary of Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.

The trail project is sponsored by the City of Roswell as part of the Roswell Riverside multi-use trail and would serve as a link within the overall trail plan for the area.

The purpose of the trail would be to extend the existing riverside trail system along Willeo Road between Azalea Road and Willeo Park.

Prior to initiating the EA, the NPS is seeking comments and input from the public during a 30-day project scoping period.

Sandy Springs Fire Rescue Offers Free CPR Class

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- Free CPR and AED classes will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11 at Sandy Springs Fire Station #4 (4697 Wieuca Road).

The classes will be from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. They are offered in support of the City's efforts to educate the community on CPR as well as Automated External Defibrillation, and to make certain that residents are trained to use this knowledge.

Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in the nation, and only five percent of sudden cardiac arrest victims survive.

Celebrate the Chattahoochee River with Muse for Life

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- What's inspiring you today? Looking for ways to get involved in something that's environmentally friendly? Are you not entirely sure how to "live green?"

Join the staff of Muse for Life (205 Hilderbrand Drive, Sandy Springs, 30328) on Saturday, Nov. 13 for a morning of hiking and cleaning up in celebration of the Chattahoochee River.

Participants will meet at Muse for Life at 10:00 a.m. and carpool to the White Water Creek area of the Chattahoochee River, where they will clean up and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. It's a great way to get a head start on a greener lifestyle.

Sandy Springs Honors Military Heroes on Veterans Day

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- Sandy Springs officials will commemorate our country's brave veterans during the inaugural City of Sandy Springs Veterans Day Celebration on Thursday, Nov. 11.

The celebration will take place at Morgan Falls Overlook Park (200 Morgan Falls Road, Sandy Springs, 30350) at 1:30 p.m., beginning with a musical performance from the Army Ground Forces Band from Fort McPherson. The official ceremony will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Events include a presentation of colors and remarks from Dr. Eva Galambos, mayor of Sandy Springs. A presentation of a Battlefield Award for Valor will be made to soldiers of the 48th Infantry Brigade, Georgia National Guard, who recently returned home from Afghanistan.

The keynote speaker will be Lt. General R. Steven Whitcomb, Former Inspector General, U.S.

Sandy Springs Fire Rescue Holds Open Houses at Fire Stations

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- For the second year in a row, the Sandy Springs Fire Department is again holding an exciting community event -- the Sandy Springs Fire Rescue Fire Station Open House.

The event will be held in celebration of Fire Safety Week on Tuesday, Oct. 5 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at all four Sandy Springs Fire Stations:

* Fire Station #1: 1425 Spalding Drive
* Fire Station #2: 135 Johnson Ferry Road
* Fire Station #3: 6025 Heards Ferry
* Fire Station #4: 4697 Wieuca Road

The event is open to all elementary and middle school-aged children and their siblings, and the goal is to teach valuable fire safety lessons that are also fun.

Students will learn about fire safety and prevention through enjoyable activities like fire house presentations.
