The Atlanta-based Educational Advisory Foundation recently held an Anti-Bullying Conference with special guest speaker and national bullying expert, Dr. Erin Mason of DePaul University. Garden Hills Elementary School in Buckhead hosted and in attendance were many teachers from surrounding schools in the Buckhead area. Dr. Mason focused not only on bullying itself, but also on what behaviors teachers and counselors should be promoting instead.
According to www.casel.com, Social and Emotional Learning or SEL, “is a process for helping children and even adults develop the fundamental skills for life effectiveness.” Dr. Mason demonstrated circumstances and tools to help deal with bullying through this method. The Educational Advisory Foundation’s mission is not only to identify student’s needs at individual schools, but to provide teachers with tools to address issues such as bullying as well. EAF was started by former teacher Cynthia Howell, with the sole purpose of advancing American Education. Although her initiative is global, her roots were started right in the heart of Atlanta.
