Sandy Springs man charged with killing mother

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- A 24-year-old Sandy Springs man has been arrested for stabbing his mother to death in their home.

Patrick Wayne Tyson was charged with malice murder, aggravated assault with intent to commit murder, and possession of a knife in the commission of a felony in the death of 57-year-old Cathleen Tyson. He was denied bond Tuesday during his first court appearance.

The victim was found dead in her unit at the Dunwoody Ridge Apartments on Spalding Forest Court at around 7:20 a.m. Monday. Sandy Springs Police Sgt. Ron Momon said she suffered blunt force trauma to her head and several stab wounds to her face.

Patrick Tyson told responding officers he went for a jog, then returned home to find his mother bleeding on the floor and two men inside the apartment. He said the men ran when they saw him.

Momon said Patrick Tyson was taken to Sandy Springs Police headquarters, where officers questioned him and found several inconsistencies in his story. The knife used in the murder was found by detectives executing a search warrant on the Tyson home.

Investigators have not yet determined a motive for the murder.
